Log Peeling and Hewing

These techniques predate the invention of sawmills, and are still relevant and beautiful today. Hand peeling of logs is possible only when the sap is running under the bark of the tree—in this climate just in the spring time. Peeled and polished logs are a staple material in Japanese teahouse construction, and are beautiful and strong in their natural form. Hewing logs with an axe or adze serves to create square or faceted surfaces which make it easier to layout and cut joinery on the timbers. Hewing also imparts a rustic texture that brings out the beauty of the wood grain.
